February is the month of hearts and valentines. They appeared in the stores as soon as Christmas decorations were put on sale. I appreciate cards, chocolate, and expressions of love just as much as the next person. I can’t help but wonder, though, does the average Joe or Jane really know what love is all about?
We can fall in love, be enthused about a color we “love,” a book, a dress, a tree, or a pet. But we recently celebrated ultimate love. A Person of the Triune God, Jesus Christ the Son, humbled Himself to be born as a human among sinners.
John 3:16-18 reads: For God so loved the world, that He gave His only Son, so that everyone who believes in Him will not perish, but have eternal life. For God did not send the Son into the world to judge the world, but so that the world might be saved through Him. The one who believes in Him is not judged; the one who does not believe has been judged already, because he has not believed in the name of the only Son of God. (NASB)
That’s what I call ultimate love. Have you ever inserted your name, “for God so loved LoRee.” Try it with yours.
Wait and watch. As soon as Valentine candy and hearts leap off the shelves, maybe even while they are still up, candy eggs and bunnies will be all over the place.
I have written several modern-day psalms concerning God’s love. Love is action. It is fun and rewarding to pour out love to those we care about, but the next time you’re among strangers, especially those on the street who aren’t dressed the way you prefer, give them a smile or word of encouragement.
Romans 12:16 Live in harmony with one another. Do not be proud, but be willing to associate with people of low position. Do not be conceited. (NIV)

This world is not my home
On earth, my body is God’s
My mind is the Holy Spirit’s
God’s Word boosts my faith
Love is not self-serving
Others are more important
God gifts those He calls
With grace to serve and worship
Hope makes my heart sing
Trouble has taught me patience
God hears my prayers for others
I seek to encourage with His light
